Using HORSE on a monthly or quarterly basis* requires four easy steps to get the data ready for the CART import.
- Set date range (Earliest discharge date / Latest discharge date)
- Point to data (Change Encounter File)
- Select cases you want to identify – Inpatient (SEP / VTE / Global) / Outpatient (Topics / ED Throughput)
- Generate New File (creates CART import file)
After HORSE has done the work, you will get a “Success” screen telling you what cases were found. The “Success” screen text is saved as a log file in the output destination location in case you need to see it later. It is named HORSE_LogNNNNN.txt with the NNNN being a system generated number to ensure no log files are over-written.
You are now ready to open up CART and import the cases HORSE has identified. Do this each time you successfully find cases with HORSE as it will overwrite the file each time you run HORSE.
*Because of CMS sampling requirements, it is best to run HORSE on a quarterly basis for the sampled measures (ED, IMM, ED-Throughput). It is also recommended to wait a full month before running HORSE to ensure all the encounters have dropped in the billing file.
